Is there a any possible solution to remove microbeads from marine environment?

After, I read the article "Environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastic particles influence larval fish ecology" from 'Science'. it made me concern about marine ecosystem and find this site to ask a question.

Is there a any possible solution (or suggestion) to remove microbeads from marine environment? or to remove from public sewer system??
I hope get some answer from your helping.

Sincerely

  • Hi Yongdae, and apologies for the late reply.

The best solution is to stop feeding the oceans with plastics! To remove them from the oceans is really tricky. It is doable with larger plastic fragments, and there are some initiatives about that, but not with small microbeads. The sewer system is today removing 90 % of the microbeads/plastic fragments entering the system, but it is mainly the larger ones. The smaller still goes through and out into the environment. But there are research ongoing to try to also catch the smaller plastic pieces.
